Key Minder - easy to use, inexpensive, industrial strength password protection
Tellura Key Minder is a security utility that helps you to keep your secrets secret. I wrote Key Minder originally for my own use, and I still use it every day. I needed it because none of the many password managers I had tried out seemed to do what I wanted, in a nice simple interface. Key Minder uses industry-leading strong encryption to store your usernames, passwords, notes, urls and other information. You just have to remember one master username and password and you can then store as many others as you need.
Key Minder is easy to use, safe and secure. It also doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
Access to your passwords on your Mac, your PC, wherever you are
Key Minder is available in both Mac OS X and Windows versions. Buy one licence for Key Minder and you can download and use both versions. The Mac and Windows versions use the same keystore format, so you can actually use the same keystore on both Windows and Mac computers.
Some of our users keep a copy of the keystore, with the Mac OS X and Windows versions of Key Minder, on a USB flash drive. They can then just plug the drive in at whatever computer they are using, Mac or PC, and have access to their security information, confident that those details are protected by some of the best encryption in the industry. What could be easier than that?

How much does it cost?
Key Minder is not free software. You can use it for as long as you like without registering it, but the features are limited: you can store only five accounts and you cannot change the preferences.
A licence for Key Minder costs just $15 (US - about £10) through our reseller Kagi. Just use the "Register..." button where you see it and you will be taken to the Tellura Key Minder page on the Kagi site. You will need to provide a real email address: we will use this to send you a licence key once we receive payment. This licence key will entitle you to use Key Minder indefinitely and upgrade the software by downloading a newer version for a period of two years. You will be able to store as many accounts as your system can hold and set the preferences how you want them. You will also be entitled to free email support during the two year licence period.
A note on licencing
When you buy a Key Minder licence, you may use it on as many computers as you want, as long as every copy is for your personal use. So:
- If you run Key Minder on a USB pen drive, you can use it on as many computers as you want. You just need one licence.
- If you use a Mac at home and a PC at work, you can use it on both. You just need one licence.
- If you own several Macs and several PCs you can install Key Minder on all of them - you can even install it on a network share - as long as it is for your use! You only need one licence.
- If you and your spouse/partner/children share one copy of Key Minder and one Key Store, you only need one licence.
- If you and your spouse/partner/children use separate copies of Key Minder, you must buy a licence for each.
- If you are using Key Minder for several workers in a business, you need to licence all of the users.
- Family and site licences are available - just get in touch if you are interested in these.

Preparing for Key Minder v2 - Key Store Migration Utility
This will only be of any interest if you are a current registered user of Key Minder up to v1.31 (the current release version). A new version of Key Minder, v2, will shortly be released. This is a substantial re-write and will introduce some new features, versions for Intel Macs and Linux users and addresses all of the major known bugs.
As part of the re-write it has become necessary to change the format of the database used for the key store in Key Minder. This will mean that in order to upgrade you will need to run a migration utility to move your key store from the old format to the new.
We need your help! Having written the migration utility, we want to ensure that it works smoothly and accurately. We have done all of the testing we possibly can here, but to be sure that it is safe in the hands of real users, we are looking for volunteers amongst existing users to try out the utility for us.
What we need is for you to download the utility, put it into a folder along with a copy (to be safe) of your Tellura Key Store file (this is called TelluraKeyStore and will be in the same folder as Key Minder itself), and just run it. The utility simplys copies data from the various tables and fields in your current Key Store and then writes them out again into the new Key Store. If any problems are reported, pass them back to us. If not, let us know anyway!
Once you have run the utility you can delete the files produced in the migration test:
- KeyMinderStore. This is the new format file. But you can delete it for now, because it would be wise to re-run the migration when Key Minder 2 is released.
- KeyMinderMigrationLog20070225114055. You should see a file with a name something like this (the numbers will be different since they are a timestamp). This is just a logfile that records the progress of the migration. If you prefer to keep this for your records there is no harm in doing so.
- Key Minder Migrator. We will be releasing a final copy of this with Key Minder 2 so there is no need to keep it.
- TelluraKeyStore. Make sure that this is a copy of your key store before you delete it!
Does this sound a bit dicey? dangerous? insecure, even? It isn't.
- None of your data is decrypted in this process. It isn't even stored in memory any longer than it needs to be to read it in from the old file and write it out to the new file
- Your old key store is not affected in any way (especially since you are working on a copy, right?). The utility just opens the database, reads encrypted data in, writes it out to the new file and then closes the key store.
- We will be happy to make the source code available to any of you who want to see it. It is written in REALbasic, so it is easy to read, and you can even download a trial copy of that software if you want to compile the utility to check it!
Anyway, if you could find the time to help us out by quickly testing this migration utility you will be helping us to develop a better new Key Minder.
Oh, there is a minor incentive. Anyone who tests the migration utility and reports back will get a further year of free licence for Key Minder. Report back with a genuine bug (we get to have the final decision on what a bug is, but we will be fair!) and we'll make it two further years' licence.
